You were reading in my seat the first time I saw you.
When I glanced at the seating chart
After walking into first-period English
On the first day of the new school year,
I realized your mistake --
The chart was upside down,
And we were next to each other
With you on my right,
Not on my left.
"Excuse me,"
I said as politely as I could,
"I think you're in my seat."
You looked up at me,
Wide-eyed underneath a pair of glasses.
Your face turned red
As you gathered your things,
Mumbled an apology,
And climbed over my chair to get to yours.
You reached for your book
To continue reading,
But I asked for your name
Before I lost my chan
